Hate crime
Our approach to hate crime
We take a zero tolerance approach to hate crime and have procedures in place for dealing quickly and effectively with complaints.
If you are a Derby Homes tenant and wish to report a hate crime you can report this by contacting us.
An Anti-Social Behaviour Officer will then contact you to discuss the matter and agree with you an appropriate course of action.
We will deal with all complaints of hate crime where the victim or the alleged perpetrator is one of our tenants.
If you are not a tenant and a victim of hate crime perpetrated by a Derby Homes tenant, we can still help you.
Derby Homes are not able to deal with reports of hate crime where neither party (victim and perpetrator) are our tenants. You will need to report the matter to Derby City Council and Derbyshire Constabulary.
Definition of a hate incident
Any incident, which may or may not constitute a criminal offence, which is perceived by the victim or any person, as being motivated by prejudice or hate.
Office for Criminal Justice Reform
We class all hate crime as high priority incidents and respond within 24 hours. We fully recognise alternative subcultures in our definition and incidents relating to subcultures are fully included in our reporting and recording process.
A hate crime or incident is any behaviour you think was caused by hatred of:
- race
- sexual orientation
- gender identity
- disability
- religion or faith
- alternative subculture
It can include name calling, graffiti or writing, attacks or violence, or damage such as to your house or car, arson or fire.
Reporting hate crime in Derby
Everyone has the right to live without fear and harassment. It's really important that you report a hate crime or incident whether you have been a victim, a witness, or you are reporting on behalf of someone else.
As well as offering a third-party hate crime reporting and signposting service, we work with Stop Hate UK and the Derbyshire Police Crime Commissioner to ensure housing has a strong role in tackling hate crime in Derby. We sit on the countywide strategic hate crime steering group and contribute to the overall hate crime strategy for Derby and Derbyshire.
The police
You can speak to the Police in confidence. You don't have to give your personal details, but if the police cannot contact you, this limits the investigation and ability to prosecute. You can contact the local police, either by telephone, SMS text messaging (for deaf people) or by visiting the local police station.
Crimestoppers
You can contact the police anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Local and national support
You can get advice, information, and support from a range of local and national organisations:

Third party hate crime reporting though Derby Homes
If you experience a hate incident, we can report it on your behalf and give you advice and support. Third party reporting centres exist all over the UK to give you a way of reporting incidents other than going to the police. This means local agencies are able to share information more effectively as reporting is standardised. More importantly, it means there are more opportunities and places to report hate crime.
